The moment you’ve been waiting for is finally here—you’re bringing home a new kitten! This is an incredibly exciting time, filled with cuddles, playfulness, and adorable antics. But between the joy, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed. What does a tiny feline actually need to thrive?

As a Certified Cat Lady™ (self-appointed, of course!), I’ve helped countless new pet parents navigate this journey. The key to a smooth transition is preparation. Having the right supplies on hand before your kitten’s paws ever cross the threshold will reduce stress for both of you and set the stage for a happy, healthy life together.

To make it foolproof, I’ve created a free printable kitten checklist that you can take right to the store. Grab it at the bottom of this post!

First, let’s break down the why behind the most critical items.

The Non-Negotiable Essentials

These are the items you simply cannot do without. Have these ready and set up before you go to pick up your new family member.

  1. The Right Food: Kittens have specific nutritional needs to support their rapid growth. Look for a high-quality food labeled specifically for "kittens." I recommend having both wet and dry food on hand. Wet food helps with hydration, while dry food can be left out for grazing (though portion control is important!).
  2. Proper Bowls: Ditch the plastic! Plastic bowls can harbor bacteria and cause feline acne. Opt for shallow stainless steel or ceramic bowls that are easy for a small kitten to eat from and easy for you to clean.
  3. Litter Box Setup: The rule of thumb is one litter box per cat, plus one extra. So for one kitten, you should ideally have two boxes. Start with a simple, low-entry box that’s easy for tiny legs to climb into. Avoid covered boxes at first—they can trap odors and feel intimidating. Choose an unscented, clumping litter, as kittens have sensitive noses and may avoid strongly perfumed options.
  4. A Secure Carrier: This is not optional for the car ride home and all future vet visits. A hard-sided carrier is safest. Make it a cozy space by placing a soft blanket or towel inside well before travel time, so it doesn’t just smell like "the scary box."

Keeping Your Kitten Safe and Sound

Kittens are curious by nature, which is part of their charm but also a potential hazard. A quick safety sweep is essential.

  • Kitten-Proofing: Get down on your hands and knees and look for dangers from a cat’s-eye view. Secure loose electrical cords, cover unused outlets, put away toxic plants (like lilies, which are extremely poisonous), and ensure small objects they could swallow are out of reach.
  • The First Vet Visit: Schedule your kitten’s first wellness exam within the first week. This visit will include a health check, vaccinations, and a discussion about spaying/neutering and parasite prevention. It’s the best thing you can do for their long-term health.

The Fun Stuff: Toys and Enrichment

A bored kitten is a destructive kitten. Providing appropriate outlets for their energy is crucial!

  • Scratching Posts: Scratching is a natural instinct for cats—it conditions their claws, marks territory, and stretches their bodies. Provide a sturdy, tall scratching post or cat tree covered in sisal rope before they decide your sofa is a better option.
  • A Variety of Toys: Kittens need play! Have a mix of toys:
  •  A Cozy Bed: While your kitten will likely end up sleeping wherever they please (often on you!), having a soft, warm bed of their own in a quiet corner gives them a safe retreat.
