Here at nolacrazycatlady.com, we’re a family. And today, we’re wrapping our arms around one of our own—the one and only Popcorn.
This handsome, all-black gentleman was born on June 26, 2014. His story with us began on September 29, 2014, when we adopted him from the Louisiana SPCA. His foster parent named him "Books" for his adorable kitten habit of hiding among the shelves, but he quickly became our Popcorn—a name that suits his playful, popping-around personality!
Popcorn is the heart of our clowder. At 11 years young, he’s a loving cat who lives for head boops, smooches, and grooming everyone—feline and human alike! He’s never met a toy he didn’t like, especially if it means a rousing game of chase-the-ball or pounce-the-wand with his furry siblings.
Yesterday, September 2nd, our world shifted. We rushed Popcorn to the emergency vet for labored breathing. The diagnosis was terrifying: fluid surrounding his lungs, a sign of congestive heart failure. He spent a long night on oxygen while the amazing vet team drained the fluid and started him on heart medication.
We are overwhelmingly relieved to share that our brave boy is responding well. He’s off oxygen and scheduled to come home this afternoon. While heart failure is a serious, lifelong condition, it’s manageable. This means we have more precious time with him, and we plan to cherish every single head boop.
His secret girlfriend, Mouse (who pines for him when she thinks no one is looking), will be thrilled to have her best friend back.
This unexpected journey comes with significant financial strain. Popcorn's emergency visit has already surpassed $1,000, and his new medications and specialist care will be ongoing. In a house full of seniors, including Tiger on special kidney diet food, every little bit helps.
If you feel moved to support Popcorn’s care, we have set up a PayPal donation option. Your kindness will help ensure our sweet boy gets the continued treatment he needs to live his best, most loving life. I can accept donations through PayPal to ashy.baby@gmail.com or CashApp/Venmo @closetsamples - just please make a note on whichever platform that it's for Popcorn (or Tiger if you want to donate to her cause). No amount is too small, and every bit makes a difference.
Thoughts, prayers, and well wishes mean the world as well. Thanks for taking the time to read about Tiger.
Thank you for being part of our community and for loving our Popcorn from afar.
The NOLA Crazy Cat Lady Family
@nolacrazycatlady I woke up this morning to find Popcorn having sudden heavy breathing. Since our regular vet is closed for Labor Day I brought him to the Emergency Vet. They did an xray and found his lungs are surrounded by fluid. They have him on oxygen and will be tapping his lungs to send off to see what the cause is, however, the vet took a small sample and based on the color she is thinking it's cancer. Although it could be cancer or heart failure. We won't know until we get the results back. Popcorn is 11 years old and up until recently had been doing well. He had developed a wheezing cough that I was going to schedule a checkup for this week, but unfortunately our discovery this morning changed that. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. If you'd like to donate towards his care I can provide my information. I'm not sure if that vet is open to allowing random payments towards an account, but I'm also willing to find out should anyone be interested in helping in that way. Hoping for a miracle for our sweet boy. I miss his head boops and rough non-stop smooches already. 💔😞 #seniorcats #blackcats #getbetter #cancersucks #heartdiseasesucks ♬ Soon You’ll Get Better - Taylor Swift
